Hole 11 – Redan
180 yards
The original Redan, the 15th at North Berwick, angles from front right to back left. Our infamous version reverses that, running from front left to back right, and is thus often referred to as a “reverse redan.” Lamented by Hogan, Nelson and other greats, this mid-length par 3 features a prominent false front that rejects short shots, and a green defended by bunkers back left and front right. As many players will attest, your score here is often either very tidy—or very large.
A short right bunker has been restored from early photography, and Franz has lowered the front shoulders of the green to better expose the flanking bunkers from the tee. The back-right corner of the green has also been returned to its original scale, making that corner more usable for hole locations but also more demanding for shots that flirt with it. In many a tournament, even the most hardened professionals would lay up, take four, and move on.
