Hole 1 – Westward Ho!
440 Yards
Aptly named for its westward orientation, this strong opening par 4 actually plays to the southwest. In the fall and winter, prevailing northeast winds can make it play noticeably shorter and more forgiving. In the spring and summer, when the wind shifts to the south or southwest (often driven by the Bermuda High), it becomes a much longer and sterner test.
At first glance, it looks like a straightforward, generous tee shot, but there is more going on for this “firm handshake” introduction to the course. The long left fairway bunker has been moved farther from the tee for the longer hitters, while the two right fairway bunkers have been combined and brought slightly closer to the tee. Long or short off the tee, you will need to commit to a line.
The rectangular, bunkerless green has kept its elevated perch, but the internal slopes have been restored to their original boldness. Distance control and trajectory are critical again.
