Hole 14 – Double Plateau
357 yards
Unlike most other templates that trace back to specific holes in the British Isles, the Double Plateau concept is uniquely Macdonald and Raynor. Likely inspired by multi-level greens, the Double Plateau at CCC, the final of three short par 4s, is a near-perfect example of Macdonald’s original idea. The hole was originally built with a back tee along the Wappoo Cut, but it has been shortened over time.
In 2016, Franz restored the mounds and bunker off the tee and elected not to remove the ditches on either side of the primary landing zone—all as seen in early ground photography, plans and aerials. Franz also built a single central bunker complex following the original plans for CCC, opting for a principal nose-style feature as a nod to Macdonald.
The current work brings back the original sizes, placements, and depths of the greenside bunkers. While the interior contours of the green remain unchanged, the green perimeter has been expanded back to its original scale. Players will once again feel the full effect of the multiple plateaus and need to think carefully about which section of the green to approach from the fairway.
